Early Life

Spent most of his childhood at Ferry Farm on the Rappahannock River. His education was limited to formal schooling, he focused on practical skills such as mathematics and surveying. Also, later in his life he became a surveyor, which allowed him to explore the Virginia frontier. .

Notable events or challenges he faced: Some challenges he faced were managing national debt during the French Revolutionary Wars. Had to deal with the Whiskey Rebellion, which highlighted the challenges of enforcing federal law. Challenged the issue of slavery and eventually freed his slaves.
